Boys Choir of Tallahassee

The Boys’ Choir of Tallahassee, a community outreach project of The Florida State University School of Social Work is a program for males who come from public and private schools throughout the Tallahassee area. The Boys’ Choir of Tallahassee continues to prepare young men for the twenty-first century through music, discipline, and academic excellence. With the Choir requiring no auditions for admission, and its motto “No Excuses, ” the Choir continues to grow in popularity on the local, state, national and international level. The program focuses its efforts on counseling and tutoring choir members. There are four major areas of life. Self esteem, reading, juvenile justice, and relationships.

Some of the Choirs most notable awards and recognitions include the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Service Award; The Early Show on CBS Feature: An American Hero; Champion for Kids Award by Kids Incorporated; The Use Your Life Award given by the Angel Network of the Oprah Winfrey Show; The Points of Light Foundation’s National Community Service Award; The Coming Up Taller Award, The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. On Track Award; The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Community Service Award; Leadership Tallahassee’s Distinguished Leadership Award; NAACP Achievement Award.. They have also received “Key’s to The City” from Winter Haven, Florida, Columbia, South Carolina, as well as Pensacola, Florida. The Zeta Phi Beta, Sorority, Inc has also recognized Director Earle Lee as #3 out of 35 in the Tallahassee Democrat’s Top 35 Citizen Award and Man of the Year.

The Choir has consistently placed first in their competition performances. Some of the awards hey have won most recently include The Gold Award 1st Place Men’s Choir, Heritage Festival Competition - New Orleans- 2002; Gold Award 1st Place Show Choir, Heritage Festival Competition - New Orleans - 2002; The Adjudicators Award 1st Place Men’s Choir, Heritage Festival Competition - New Orleans - 2002; The Adjudicators Award 1st Place Show Choir, Heritage Festival Competition, New Orleans - 2002; 1st Place Most Outstanding Choral Program, Heritage Festival Competition - New Orleans - 2002; 1st Place Most Outstanding Choral Group, Heritage Festival Competition - New Orleans - 2002

These successes have made tremendous impacts on the self-esteem of our Choir members. Each member now sees himself in a larger, worldwide context of personal possibilities and opportunities for the future. And with each performance they give, our Choir members learn they have the ability to achieve and excel.
